BresoTec Develop Innovative Device To Diagnose Sleep Apnea At Home

People with sleep apnea experience recurrent pauses of breathing, depriving organs of oxygen during sleep. If left untreated, it can increase the risk of a number of health problems, including high blood pressure, stroke and heart failure. In addition, it may be responsible for poor performance in everyday activities, as well as driving accidents. However, up to 90% of people with sleep apnea do not know they have the disorder. This is largely due to how it is diagnosed, with patients forced to undergo inconvenient overnight testing in sleep laboratories, which often have very long waiting times.

The Toronto-based startup BresoTec, founded by the University Health Network (UHN) and MaRS Innovation, develops and commercialize technologies to better diagnose and treat sleep disorders. Their first product, BresoDx, is an innovative device to help increase access to sleep apnea diagnosis. The wireless, battery-operated device is worn during sleep to measure sounds and movement, and can be used at home in the comfort of the patient’s own bed. The BresoDx require minimal instruction effort, and is used with a few simple steps. Before going to sleep, a pull tab is removed from the device and the start button is pushed before fitting the device to the head. When waking up, the microSD card in the device is removed and sent for analysis. Clinicians then use the collected data to diagnose the disorder, with results as accurate as those from traditional methods according to several clinical trials.

Sleep apnea affects around 10% of adults globally, but many are unaware that the sleeping disorder is the main cause affecting their health. It is usually recognized as a problem by family members who witness apneic episodes or by a primary care doctors due to certain risk factors and symptoms. A proper diagnosis require an overnight sleep evaluation in a clinic to assess sleep patterns, together with sound and movement. BresoTec’s innovative technology could significantly increase access to care, allowing patients to test for sleep apnea in the comfort of their own home. Its simple, user-friendly design coupled with the accuracy of in-lab standard tests, make BresoDx a reliable, cost-effective sleep test solution for patients, as well as physicians and health care providers.

Increasing access to a reliable and accurate home-based test of sleep apnea is of high importance. It will not only allow more patients to seek treatment to improve health outcomes and increase quality of life, but could also play a major role in public health strategies. It could reduce the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and depression, be used as a powerful preventative tool that could lower overall healthcare cost, highlighting BresoTec's huge potential.

BresoDx was developed at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute of UHN by Geoff Fernie, Douglas Bradley and Hisham Alshaer. The technology was the first to complete MaRS EXCITE, an initiative that accelerate the adoption of health technology in Ontario, and is licensed to BresoTec. The startup has received regulatory approval from Health Canada and the European Commission, and has previously won multiple awards, including the POINT Award at the European Respiratory Society and the MaRS HealthKick Innovation Challenge.
