ExplORer Surgical Develop Innovative Platform To Manage And Coordinate the OR

Patient safety is an essential part of quality healthcare and over the last decades surgical care has improved dramatically, enabling surgeons to master ever greater technical challenges. Despite these advances, patients still experience preventable harm. Approximately 50% of hospital errors happen in the OR, and most of them are due to poor communication. Technical training alone is not enough to ensure the desired outcomes, and as a result, there is a growing focus on developing and implementing solutions that help improve teamwork and communication in the operating room.

The Chicago-based startup ExplORer Surgical is determined to improve communication in the OR, and has developed a workflow management tool to help manage tasks and tools for surgical teams. The tool is an interactive digital playbook, an app that gives each member of the surgical team customized instructions on what to do next. The app tells the OR team exactly what instruments the surgeon will use and in what order to help cut down waste, maximize communication between surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses, and provide real-time performance data to administrators to enhance quality of care and efficiency. This allow providers to compare performance and learn from each other, while helping managers better forecast room utilization, staffing and equipment use, increasing both hospital performance and patient safety.

Hospitals are not only evaluated in terms of production, but in terms of quality of care and outcomes. The patient and their safety is the number one concern, and finding the right combination of technical skills and teamwork capabilities are vital in achieving the desired outcomes in the OR. ExplORer Surgical has developed an innovative and powerful digital health tool that help improve communication and awareness in the OR, effectively coordinating to reduce hospital costs and increase patient safety. While the critical processes of surgery for decades have been managed using paper, ExplORer provide a game changing platform that help improve the workflow of the OR, addressing one of the key challenges facing all hospitals across the world; how to reduce costs while improving quality of care.

ExplORer Surgical was founded in 2015 out of a research lab at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where head and neck surgeon Dr. Alexander Langerman found there was a universal challenge of coordinating services of a surgical team. In 2015, the startup came in 2nd at the New Venture Challenge, and has previously raised over $1 million from 19 investors. In 2017, they announced the closing of a $3 million Series A financing round led by Aphelion Capital, with participation from existing and new investors, including Elliott Management, the University of Chicago, M25 Group, and the Harvard Business School Angels of Chicago. The innovative platform is already running at five hospital.
